Why We Need To Take Family Portraits

By Abby Cruz

The best photos we have are probably those shot with our loved ones during joyful moments. These pictures are normally shot when we least know it. But as they are easy to shoot with our digital cameras and camera phones, maybe we need a little more official to show the next generation. A family portrait professionally shot is what we need now.

As much as it will benefit as, a family portrait is also for the next generation. It is the supreme family remembrance that will tell the children of our children their family history. It celebrates our milestones as family with every member added and every candle added on our birthday cake. And besides, it's tradition. We may have lots of snap shot photos of our family, but family photographs need a more professional approach.

Naturally, every family photograph includes the whole family. And if you have a family with small kids, it's almost certain that the photo shoot won't complete in only a few minutes. children will always act as kids so ensure that you bring candies and toys to induce them to behave as sitting still for a few minutes isn't their strong point. Make them comfortable as much as possible. The same goes for the senior family members. Bring their medicines as a preventive measure. The heat from the photographer's lights or the sunlight, if the photo take takes place outdoors, can wear them down so allocate a room or shade area for them to cool down.

Discuss with your family the style of picture you will shoot. If you have to, vote on the most popular recommendations so everybody will feel included. You can have an outdoor picture or take it inside. Then discuss what theme you would like. Traditional family portraits go for formal shots, but it would also be fun to have a theme like all-red motif photo or mafia-themed shot where everyone gets to dress in mafia boss-like suits and attire. After agreeing on the picture treatment, inform your photographer and let him direct the show from then on. Just remember to avoid eminent landmarks as backgrounds because the attention of the photo will switch to the backdrop.

Lastly, accept the reality that not everyone has a perfect smile. You might expect your family to have flawless Barbie and Ken smiles, but realize that if some might smirk or others might refuse to smile at all then it is just okay. You would want to present to each one's personality more than to incorporate a small formality in the picture because nothing is more depressing than a family photograph featuring members sporting fake smiles.
