Be A Better Photographer With The Right Lenses

By Harold Spencer

Photographers place a premium on the quality of the photos they take, making sure they are of optimum quality. To get the very best quality we need to know which lenses to use and the best time to use them. There are several lenses on the market today that should become part of our every day tool.

Standard lenses are, as the name implies, your average, everyday photography lenses. These lenses are so common and popular because of their versatility, as their 40 to 60 mm focal length is ideal for most, if not all types of photos. It's the most flexible of all the lenses and should remain on the camera body at all times.

Telephoto zoom lenses are ideal for nature photographers, as this is perfect for taking wildlife pictures. A telephoto zoom lens has a 60 mm to 300 mm focal length, and is ideal not only for wildlife photography, but also for sports photography. The telephoto lens is able to capture both objects at far away distances, as well as landscape images.

While these lenses are also versatile, they aren't the ideal lens to use for close-up pictures. Beware of blank spaces on your images where you should have had a full picture to begin with.

When using a telephoto lens always make sure that you have the camera supported with a tripod. In lieu of a tripod, you can use a bean bag which will serve pretty much the same purpose if you put the lens on the bag.

Those who prefer taking landscape shots go with wide-angle lenses most often. They are so popular among landscape photographers as the viewfinder allows you a focal length from 17mm to 40mm - this would result in more of the scene included in the picture. If you use wide lenses, you would then need to choose a closer foreground image as opposed to narrower lenses of this variety. Ultra wide-angle lenses have a focal length of 8 mm to 28 mm.

If you're the type who wants their close-up to be as close as possible, then go with macro lenses, with focal lengths of about 100mm. If you are looking to take images of small objects, such as: flowers or insects, a macro lens should become part of your camera bag. A macro lens will also allow you to take unique abstract images. By using a wide aperture with a macro lens on natural shapes can create the perfect abstract image.

Powerful winds can make it difficult to focus using a macro lens, so be careful and exercise necessary safety precautions.
