5 Event Photography Essentials

By Shiela Santos

Event photography can be a daunting assignment for any photographer. Depending on the size of the event, this may need a one-man team or an entire entourage of pro photographers to handle the diverse placements specially for big, synchronised events. As a customer, you would wish to be sure that the photographer has everything on the list. You know you are dealing with a pro if these five essential shots are taken into the final portfolio of your event:

Emotions. In event photography, it is very essential to catch the emotions of those who are key players to the event and also of the spectators. Capturing the emotions makes the photos evident about how everyone felt during and about the event, without having to ask them one by one. Moments of laughter, tears, joy and pure bliss should be caught on the photographs. After all is said and done, individuals remember what they feel more than what they know. So if they felt exhilarated to be part of the event, then the photographs should show just this.

People. This is not hard for event-goers to admit: they go to events for vanity reasons. And so, society pages of local dailies are peppered with poses here and there of who-and-who rubbing shoulders with the bigwigs of company so-and-so. Just next to emotions in import, in event photography, pictures of prominent people going to the event are part of the package. In case of a corporate event, it may help with branding or corporate image. In case of a private event, the photographs of people who attended the event serve as a memento to be treasured for generations.

Chronology. This is already given in event photography. Basically, the photographer takes photos of things as they happen, and ensure that everything is covered from start to end. This is simply a compilation of all the activities as presented in the programme. And for this to be handled better, the photographer can review the programme before the event and plans on performing the takes for the chronological order of activities. In case the program has names of event guests and , it would also be good to already put faces to the names ahead of time so when there is an opportunity to take a shot especially of the very eye-catching invitees, then the photographer can do so. Remember, the social occasion can be so frenetic and so a photographer who knows how to manage his time and work his way around gains the best and most accomplished coverage.

Highlights. Every event has a salient gimmick, usually as an opening salvo or just before introducing the product, in the case of product launches. Part of event photography is of course taking photographs of the event highlight or gimmick. The photographer can play around with his fanciful take on the gimmick or highlight of the event to accentuate on his photographs that this, indeed, is a fantastic part of the presentation.

Turn Of Events. Sometimes, no matter how well-prepared the program for an event is, certain things trend away from the original plan. A trusted event photography is able to stand by and capture these turn of events. If these happen to be bad, then it does not matter. The client can choose which pictures to include and which to take out at a later time. The fundamental thing is to cover everything, one can never know if the shift on the event can bring beautiful surprises.
