Choose A Glamorous Equestrian Wedding For Your Special Day

By Flora Vinson

Choosing an equestrian wedding is a very romantic way to mark your special day. Hiring a horse-drawn carriage from a carriage hire service gives the pleasure of a novel arrival at your destination. The bride and even the bridal party can all be accommodated in the carriages of today.

If two venues are being used and they are distant from each other, you may need to arrange alternative transport for part of the journey. A maximum distance is usually given and a time limit for hiring. This will include sufficient time for photos

The carriage type differs with each company. Some horse-drawn carriages allow the passengers to be seen more easily and these types are chosen as wedding vehicles. A pair of horses is normal and usually four to six people can be accommodated.

A very popular carriage is the 'pumpkin' coach. This is totally enclosed in glass, making the bride clearly visible. Richly coloured velvet upholstery, ribbons and lots of gilding make the pumpkin coach a fairytale sight.

The landau (sometimes termed barouche or Victoria on the websites) is another elegant vehicle, usually fitted with brass lanterns and rich upholstery. It is low-slung and seats four (perhaps six) in the body with richly upholstered benches facing each other. A low door allows access but this may be absent to enable better viewing of the bridal party.

Some vehicles are adapted with an extra two external seats. The driver and groom sit separately and high. Fold back hoods can be raised in seconds if the need arises.

Safe, well-trained horses are used to pull the carriages. The horses are totally comfortable with all sorts of situations. They will be matched and beautifully groomed with plumed bridles and tassels adorning the harness. Such a smart turnout will make an equestrian wedding the beginning of a perfect day.
