Making A Classic Family Portrait More Creative

By Cindy Raj

You again find yourself wondering what to do for your annual family portrait this year. You reminisce your earlier portraits, and although the traditional formal setup turned out beautiful, it did not exactly vary from the rest of the portraits taken in the past. This year, for a change, you choose to get more innovative.

And then you begin asking yourself what themes can best portray your family. For this purpose, these tips may come in handy.

Think about your family's personality, or perhaps hobbies you all share together. Are you all inclined to music? Does your family love to travel around the world? Do you all love the colour red? Are you all keen on a certain film or television show, so much so that you are likely to adopt the characters in that particular show? Do you have favourite super heroes?

Let this act as your inspiration for your family portrait's theme. Adding props, such as luggage, maps, as well as souvenirs from your trips will make the portrait of a travelling family much more vibrant and interesting, let alone real. If you're a family of musically-inclined, why not bring along a couple of your instruments and let your photographers get creative with your portrait?

When it comes to photographers for family portraits, you must remember to choose the best fit for your own needs. Photographers produce varied qualities of work; similarly, what is lovely for one might not strike as good enough for everybody else. This is exactly why you must always look at a photographer's sample portraits prior to signing up for a session. By looking at these samples, you can gauge which photographer could give you the the exact results you want.

Don't hesitate to request suggestions on other creative concepts from your photographer. The same, you can always ask for tips on how to improve your concept even more and make it more camera-friendly. Keep in mind that the more the innovative input that is poured into your family portrait, all the better it gets.
