There are many little tricks and tips to getting good wedding photography done on the cheap. One of my favorite ones is giving amateur photographers a chance. You might not realize this, but the best photographers tend to only shoot photos out of love of the art of photography. These people have other day-jobs or careers and almost feel it immoral to charge much for photography, even though they're better than most pros.
To find a person like this you can do many things, but my best trick is to use the internet. You can go through different photography forums or communities where amateur artsy photographers proudly share their work with one another. You can usually filter them by state or city, so try to find ones in Chicago if you can and then look how you like their photos (if they shoot people and weddings at all).
You would then contact them, compliment them on their work and explain how even though you know they're not a "photo studio" you would love to have them shoot your wedding, and then ask them how much it would cost. Tell you would pay whatever their price is . Don't worry; they will give you very cheap rates way below what photo studios charge for.
The only downside to this strategy is that even though you'll get much better photos for much cheaper, these people aren't skilled at quick and efficient printing. This means you will have to go ahead and pick the photos you like best and then find a good deal on just printing photos in the formats you need.
Even though you won't get rates for the printing that are as low as a photo studio shooting would, if you combine the complete costs it will still come out cheaper than hiring a studio to do everything from shoot to organize to print. You just need a very talented amateur.
